California officials in charge of workplace safety rules rejected a proposal that would require adult film actors to wear condoms while on set, The Associated Press reports.
For the measure to pass the state Division of Occupational Safety and Health’s Standards Board, it requires four votes. The condom measure received three of five votes, but one board member was absent and one board position is open.
Several adult actors attended the meeting to argue against mandatory condoms in porn. They claimed that viewers wouldn’t watch films with condoms, and that such a requirement would force the industry underground and out of the state.
The issue isn’t resolved, however, because California residents will still vote on the topic in November. The controversial measure was put on the ballot thanks to an initiative sponsored by AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF). A similar measure already passed in Los Angeles County.
