The developers of the former St. Vincent’s Hospital site, which includes a park space, have rejected the winning proposal in a design competition to create an AIDS memorial park, according to DNAinfo.com. The Manhattan hospital was the epicenter of the early days of the AIDS epidemic in New York City. “Infinite Forest,” the winning design approved by the AIDS Memorial Park Coalition and created by the Brooklyn architecture firm Studio a+1, imagines the park space surrounded by three tall, mirrored walls and filled with white birch trees and benches. However, a preexisting plan proposed by Rudin Management was approved by the City Planning Commission on January 23, and the development company has said that it intends to proceed with its original design plan.
