A different sort of Olympic record was broken this summer in Rio de Janeiro: About 450,000 free condoms were supplied to athletes and staff—three times the number distributed four years ago in London. What’s more, for the first time ever, this year’s supply included internal, or female, condoms (100,000 of them, plus 175,000 packets of lube). When asked whether the condom surge was a result of Zika fears—like HIV, the Zika virus can be spread sexually—the International Olympic Committee, which distributes the condoms, told The Associated Press that it simply wanted to promote safer sex. We think that effort deserves a gold medal.
