The U.S. Senate passed the HOPE Act (HIV Organ Policy Equity Act), which would lift the federal ban on research into the possibility of HIV-positive people donating organs to other HIV-positive people. In a statement of support, Senators Barbara Boxer (D–Calif.) and Tom Coburn (R–Okla.) praised the passage of the bipartisan legislation. Allowing such research could open the door to organ transplants between people living with HIV, which are currently prohibited by a medically outdated law. The HOPE Act has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representative.
