A 21-year-old man from St. Cloud, Florida, was removed from a league basketball team because he has HIV, the Sun Sentinel reports. Dakota Basinger has played all season for Florida Dream Sports, which is sponsored by the city of Kissimmee.
In the middle of a playoff game, the referee called a timeout. A city employee then called Basinger into a room and asked him if he was HIV positive, which he confirmed. He was diagnosed with the virus in early April and posted his HIV status on Facebook.
The city employee told Basinger he would need to stop playing permanently. The city employee “acted independently and without supervisor approval,” according to a city spokesperson who asserts that Basinger will be allowed to play in the league again.
