In a signing ceremony at the first Summit to End HIV/AIDS in America, a document committing to an America without the disease was unveiled, according to statements by the National Minority AIDS Council (NMAC), which developed the document. The Declaration to End HIV/AIDS in America was written in conjunction with a blue ribbon panel of more than 80 HIV/AIDS activists and advocates chaired by renowned researcher Julio Montaner. The summit was held the day before the opening of the 2012 United States Conference on AIDS. Original signers included NMAC executive director Paul Kawata and Black AIDS Institute president and CEO Phill Wilson. Celebrity signers included basketball star Magic Johnson and television personality Wendy Williams.
