More than 100 advocates have sent Governor Andrew Cuomo (D–N.Y.) an open letter asking him to support legislation that improves affordable housing for homeless and low-income people with HIV/AIDS, according to a statement from VOCAL-NY, which is leading the campaign. The legislation would cap the rent contribution of HIV-positive New Yorkers receiving rental assistance at 30 percent of their disability income, which is already the standard for other low-income housing programs in the state. Currently, many low-income people with HIV/AIDS who receive rental assistance pay more than 70 percent of their disability income toward rent, which leaves them with about $12 per day for all other expenses. Former Governor David Paterson vetoed a similar proposal in 2010.
