Research pioneer David Barry, MD, died of a heart attack in January at 58. A virologist known for his vivid storytelling and chain-smoking, Barry was widely respected by scientists and activists alike for his relentless thinking outside the box. In the mid-’80s, when little was known or cared about HIV, Barry led the team that brought AZT -- the first effective treatment -- to market in record time. An early advocate of the multi-drug “cocktail” approach to HIV treatment, Barry worked for Burroughs-Wellcome for 18 years before helping to launch Triangle Pharmaceuticals. “He was a larger-than-life figure known for his enthusiasm and persistence,” said Triangle prez Chris Rallis.
