Magic Johnson regrets cutting his professional basketball career short because of his HIV diagnosis, the Los Angeles Times reports. In an interview in anticipation of the 20th anniversary since he announced his retirement from the Los Angeles Lakers, Johnson recounts that in the early 1990s teammates and opponents feared they were at risk of contracting HIV through simple contact. “If I knew [then] what I know now, I wouldn’t have retired,” Johnson said. “But I didn’t know that then.”
