“Baseball Legend’s HIV Link!” No, it’s not a National Enquirer headline, and it’s not as out in left field as it sounds. There are recent reports of HIVers developing a neuromuscular syndrome similar to Lou Gehrig’s Disease -- a progressive, untreatable and fatal illness technically known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. In people with HIV, the syndrome strikes at a younger age and progresses more rapidly than classic ALS. The good news, sports fans, is docs say the AIDS version of ALS reverses and even disappears in some patients who start anti-HIV treatment, and does not seem to be fatal (so far). Let’s hope that more studies are up at bat soon!
