Seventeen HIV-positive women supposedly working illegally as prostitutes were arrested in Greece for intentionally causing serious bodily harm, The Boston Globe reports. The Greek Police website published 12 of the women’s names and photographs. This angered human rights advocates who said it was unclear whether the women were aware they had HIV. Although prostitution is legal in Greece, the arrests follow the country’s crackdown on illegal brothels in response to a sharp rise in new HIV infections. According to Greece’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 954 new HIV infections were reported in 2011, a 57 percent increase from the previous year.
